A 21-day ceremonial journey of remembrance, courage & return.
There is a deep call moving across the four directions — a stirring that travels through bloodlines, across oceans, through dreams. It is the quiet beckoning of the medicine, the whisper of the Great Grandmother, drawing us toward a fire in an unknown corner of Africa. We arrive from far-off lands, carrying our masks, our misgivings, and the fragile courage of souls in transition. And yet, as the circle opens, something ancient awakens. Strangers begin to remember each other. Faces feel familiar. Hearts recognise a tribe they have stood beside before — in other lifetimes, other ceremonies, other gateways. What begins as a weekend becomes a portal, and what gathers here is not an event… but a reunion.
The New Tribe, Old Eyes African Retreat is a three-day immersive medicine weekend held just outside Cape Town, South Africa. It continues into an eighteen-day microdosing integration and transformation journey (online), ending in a sacred witnessing ceremony — the final step of our personal shamanic odyssey. In total, it is a twenty-one–day arc of renewal, remembrance, and awakening — where we begin as strangers and leave as tribe. After more than a decade of guiding this work, we have seen this format consistently offer the deepest value, clarity, and embodiment from sacred plant-medicine.
The weekend opens with a traditional African welcoming and cleansing ritual — a gentle arrival into the land, into body, and into community. From there, we journey through two night-time Ayahuasca ceremonies and a daytime Hauchuma/San Pedro transformation session. Each morning begins with Tiger Hymn Shamanic Primal Breathwork and body integration — helping the medicine settle not just in mind, but in muscle, memory, and breath.
On the main process day, we gather around the fire for a powerful shamanic ceremony — where we release old contracts, speak truth to our past, and call in new pathways. It is a moment of courage, clarity, and quiet prayer.
This retreat has become a reset for body, mind, and soul. For the many who have walked this fire and medicine path over the years, it remains a turning point — where life begins to feel truer, lighter, and more deeply aligned.

WAKE CIRCLE FACILITATOR TEAM
Wake Circle is a contemporary shamanic tribe rooted in deep integrity, ancient wisdom, and earth-based practice.
Your lead facilitator, Hymn Jay, is a ceremonial musician, shamanic practitioner, and transformational guide who has held hundreds of journeys across South Africa. His approach is gentle, grounded, authentic, and deeply human — honouring the intelligence of the medicine and the sovereignty of every participant.
A team of experienced guardians will support you, each bringing a different strand of strength, presence, and care.
This is a safe space.
A brave space.
A truth space.
Hymnj is the co-founder of Wake Circle. A spiritual teacher, shamanic facilitator and medicine singer with an exquisite healing voice, his unique medicine music style has evolved over a decade of facilitating shamanic ceremonies. He is a father, leader and healer of the divine masculine energy. Having walked an earlier life path as an award-winning theatre director, he has since committed his energy to engendering transformation through the healing power of shamanic plant medicines, story-healing and sacred medicine music, guiding people back into connection with their higher power and greater purpose.
Simone Beckerling (Moni) is a legendary medicine woman and an experienced voyager of sacred plants who has joined Wake Circle bringing with her a wealth of facilitation experience. Her journey began in 2002, climbing the mountains of Peru with a shaman, and travelling to Mapia, the heart of ayahuasca in Brazil. She has since walked an extraordinary path with the Santo Diame community. With her diverse experience of teacher plants and the purification of the sweat lodge and vision quest practice, she is able to co-create the synergy necessary to evoke the deep healing and holding the plants offer. Her firm belief is that with the necessary holding the light can enter where wounds can truly heal: ‘Aha Mitakuyasin, to all our relations, may we urgently heal so that compassion can arise everywhere for the sake of this planet and for the sake of all sentient beings.’
Mangaliso Ntekiso stands at the forefront of bridging the ancient and the contemporary, weaving the rich tapestry of isiNtu principles into the fabric of modern healing practices. As a devoted cultural and heritage practitioner with over a decade of deep-rooted engagement in the art of indigenous healing, Mangaliso embodies the essence of a Sangoma, guiding souls through the journey of self-discovery and healing. In his sacred role, Mangaliso leads transformative retreats and facilitates cross-cultural discussions that not only enlighten but also heal, utilizing the timeless wisdom of isiNtu. His work is a testament to the power of traditional knowledge in addressing the spiritual and emotional ailments of the modern world.

Reflections from the heart
“I found out about Wake Circle on an online forum while seeking out a last-minute retreat for an upcoming holiday in Cape Town, with a commenter claiming that this shaman was ‘the real deal’. By chance – or likely fate – the weekend retreat was on the exact weekend I’d be here. From my first email interactions with the facilitators, it felt right to take the leap of faith. Nervous, excited and open-minded, yet a little wary of it being ‘crusty woo-woo’ or pretentious, I kept my expectations low to avoid disappointment. I can now say that any high hopes I had tried to suppress were far exceeded: Hymn J is, indeed, the real deal. Our small group of five was treated to a professional, grounded and even luxurious experience with Hymn J and Moni, loaded with their generosity and creativity. The terms were set with genuine respectfulness, building a space that felt safe to be open and go deep.I felt grateful to be there the moment I arrived at the beautiful venue, and I know I’ll continue to remember this experience as a true lifetime highlight.Haux haux” Lees (Ireland)
“I had booked my trip to South Africa a while ago. Shortly after I got the idea to join an Ayahuasca retreat. I checked online and came across “Wake Circle”. After having a closer look at their Website and a video call with the man, Hymn Jay, himself, I felt safe with this organisation and took the leap to enrol in their “New tribe, old eyes” Ayahuasca retreat weekend. The weekend vastly over-exceeded all my expectations. The location, the level of organisation, the approach in general, the level of professionalism, the power, kindness and wisdom of the facilitators. I was willing to go deep, beyond the mental blockages that had held me in confinement for too long. I was ready to be set free. Hymn Jay and Moni guided me safe, firm, and gentle. Deep into the core of my soul, under their mesmerising drumbeats, heavenly guitarplay and wonderful chants. This is world class ladies and gentlemen. If you feel the calling of the medicine, and you read this, see it as your final sign; Make contact with the organization and secure yourself a spot in 1 of their retreats.

“Back to the roots: My first Ayahuasca retreat in Africa: From the depths of my heart, I want to express my immense gratitude to Hmjay, Danielle and Mangaliso for hosting me with such a warm and loving welcome. Your unwavering support and gentle guidance throughout this retreat made my journey not only transformative but profoundly healing. You walked me through each step, holding my hand and ensuring that I felt safe and nurtured every moment of the way. This retreat was a beautiful continuation of a journey that began years ago, marking my second Ayahuasca experience. This time, however, felt uniquely grounding, enveloped in the magic of Africa and the roots of humanity. I connected deeply with myself and my surroundings, feeling a profound sense of safety and protection. The heartfelt conversations we shared opened my soul, allowing us to explore our vulnerabilities and triumphs together. It was a divine glimpse into the richness of our senses, filled with meaningful exchanges and the enchanting music that surrounded us. As we gathered around the fire to release what no longer served us, I felt a powerful collective energy that brought us closer together. With the beautiful voices of Hymnj, Danielle and Mangaliso guiding us, we danced in ceremony, celebrating our connection to oneself, each other and the universe. This retreat was a sacred space, an oasis of love and healing amongst the breathtaking beauty of South Africa. I carry this experience in my heart, and I cannot wait to return. I wholeheartedly recommend this remarkable retreat to anyone seeking deep healing and transformation. It is a journey that truly has the power to change lives, and I am forever grateful for the love and wisdom shared during this sacred time.” Chady Minkara
“This was the most amazing experience! From the first second we were surrounded by, and immersed in, love, attention and caring of absolutely exceptional team – knowledgeable, caring, and professional. Everything was genuine and deep from the heart. Everything was designed to help each person to achieve what they needed. And – I loved the songs so much… Thank you, Hymnj and the team, for everything! I will be returning!” Eve
“This was my second time attending this retreat and it did not disappoint. I brought many expectations to the first retreat, not for a specific experience but for a profound event to occur. Some people did have mystical experiences but my journey was much more subtle but equally profound. I had much less anticipation this time around. I went into this retreat with much more peace within myself, allowing me to be present with the experience. HymnJ advised that we form a relationship with the medicine and that transformed my experience. I really felt held by Mother Ayahuasca in a way that I hadn’t felt before. HymnJ and the facilitators created a beautiful and safe space that allowed us all to be vulnerable and allowing. They showed us so much love and care and I was in awe of their capacity to show up. Do not even get me started on the beautiful music that carried us through the weekend. What a magical weekend!!!!Gratitude and love to the entire team and my tribe!” Sihle
“I had the privilege of attending my second ayahuasca retreat with Wake Circle this past weekend, and I can confidently say that it was an experience unlike any other. Each retreat has been incredible in its own right, but this one was extraordinarily powerful. I experienced a massive personal breakthrough that I truly believe will change my life forever.
The human connection fostered during this retreat was beyond powerful. Hymn Jay’s wisdom consistently blows my mind; every interaction with him leaves me inspired and enlightened. Each participant brought something unique to the table, providing me with tools that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I find it hard to articulate my gratitude for the facilitators, the beautiful music, and every single new tribe brother and sister I connected with. Speaking of the music—oh, the music! The Wake Circle team creates soundscapes that transport you to another world. Even without the medicine, the music alone is capable of profound healing. Thank you, Wake Circle team, for this transformative experience. I am filled with big love and immense gratitude for all that you do.” Marise
“Words are so limited in expressing what the Wake Circle Team and Tribe has done for me, my ancestors, and for future generations. Our hearts are open. It was not easy, but during the entire process, I felt held. The medicine was so gentle and loving yet stern. Like my great grandma and my grandpa, very wise. I faced one of my biggest monsters, it felt like Goliath. I now see the David in me. I no longer feed that monster, and as a result, I now believe in my power again. I’m finding healthy ways on how to express myself and discerning between outside voices and my own. I’m dancing to the beat of my OWN drum, and I’m so in love with the sound. It’s actually a vibe 🙂 “

“New tribe, old ways retreat is a journey (evolution) from your old set ways ( ego) to your new authentic self ( soul) . You have all the answers in yourself to find your authentic self. Ayahuasca opens the way ( gives you lessons) to find the beautiful human in you and everyone else. I am a loner and was apprehensive at doing my Ayahuasca journey with a group of strangers, after the first night I realized the massive benefit of seeing my issues in other people. My analogy would be like hot coals in a fire, take one out and see how quick it dies while all the other hot coals are thriving from the benefit of being with each other.”

“I feel that a lot has been healed. A lot has been wiped clean. A lot has been nurtured and soothed. I never in my wildest imagination dreamed that I could have this positive attitude toward myself and life.”

“I feel extremely Blessed and Grateful for the opportunity to attend the New Tribe, Old Eyes retreat! The support and love that I felt and still feel from you, the facilitators and my fellow journeyers is above and beyond any expectation I ever had. I will never forget this incredible experience.
